They were protecting their property. A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Tariq Jahan, whose son was killed, stood in the middle of the semi-circle of some 250 well-wishers as they lit candles.

Magistrates in London, Manchester and Solihull worked through the night on Wednesday to fast track some of the defendants who were in custody in relation to the disturbances. The total number of people arrested in relation to riots which started on Saturday stands at more than 1,100.
