Whether you love them or hate them, Christmas songs are almost unavoidable as we head closer to the big day.

But you might have noticed that a lot of the songs battling it out for the number one festive spot are classics rather than new hits.

All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey was released back in 1994 and has featured on most Christmas playlists since then, but it didn't reach the UK number one spot until 2020!

There are so many old Christmas pop songs that come back year after year

Do you prefer some of the older songs or do you want to hear something new? What is your favourite Christmas song? Let us know in the comments below!

Mariah's hit certainly isn't alone in being a recurring challenger for the Christmas number one spot.

One song which is looking to claim the crown this year, was first released back in 1987.

The Pogue's Fairytale of New York has featured several times in the UK top 20 since it was released, but has only ever got as high as number two.

And we just can't discuss Christmas classics without mentioning Wham!.

Last Christmas has never reached the festive number one slot

You might not recognise their faces, but the chances are you'll have heard their festive hit - at least once!

In 1984 the band, formed of duo George Michael and Andrew Ridgely released Last Christmas.

It missed out on the Christmas number one slot to the Band Aid charity single Do They Know It's Christmas? Another ever-popular festive track.

Last Christmas is so popular that people play a game called 'Whamageddon', in which they try and avoid hearing to the hit for as long as possible in the run-up to Christmas.

Lucky for them, there are some new festive tunes to pop on your playlist.

Every December there are artists hoping to get to number one with their original tunes going up against the old classics.
