Advice

Get the audience laughing

Steve Edge & Jason Manford

Jason Manford and Steve Edge are a comedy writing duo who both started their careers in stand-up. They've recently had a programme commissioned for 麻豆官网首页入口 London and are also working with Channel 4.

As well as teaming up to create comedy gold, the pair are also regularly making us laugh on stage and on the small screen. Jason was shortlisted for 2005's Perrier Award and Steve is a familiar face on comedy hits such as I'm With Stupid and Phoenix Nights.

Here they share some of their tips for surviving the world of comedy.

Write as a pair whenever you can
Writing as a team is so much easier as I'll say a joke, he'll top it, then I'll top his again... you bounce off each other.

Get in front of an audience
Everyone's got a fear of rejection but you're taking it to ridiculous levels... You are really putting yourself on the line. But that's why stand-up is so rewarding when it works.

Don't expect it to happen overnight
It's taken years for [our pilot] to come together and it's been rejected many times... You need to realise when you put something in to the 麻豆官网首页入口, or anywhere else, it really does take a long time to get anywhere.

Comedy vs reality
All you'll get in a dressing room when you tell a joke is, 'Ahh, very clever', - that means it's funny!

Don't compare yourself to others
The problem is when you start comparing yourself to other stand-ups... The only person you should compare yourself to is you - and if you're doing better now than you were six months ago then you're winning.
