Mark Lee
Mark Lee

Mark Lee has been writing short stories for his own enjoyment since he was in primary school and aims to have some of his work published. He suffered a spell of writers block for about 5 years but now that he is back in harness he has been entering competitions, going to classes and using the Get Writing website. His favourite writer is Stephen King and he is slowly but surely working his way through his works. He also likes Anne Rice and David Gemmel.

Office Romance by Mark Lee

Their eyes met across a crowded office and he smiled. For weeks they had been giving each other glances when they thought the other wasn鈥檛 looking but this time it was unavoidable. As soon as he had lifted his head to get a quick peek at the girl he had been longing for, she raised hers. They looked straight into each other鈥檚 eyes and he could she was smiling now. And then came the height of flirtation, she flicked her hair and stuck her tongue out at him. He reciprocated this action, his mind becoming a stir of what may or may not happen. Could this be going somewhere new and exciting or was she just a flirt by nature even though she isn鈥檛 interested? He fell from his daydream with a crash when he realised it was probably the second that was true, I mean why would a girl like that be interested in him? She was 5鈥2 and a busty blond. Everything he liked in a girl. He looked over again but she had gone. That was that then, there was nothing in it; just a lot of wishful thinking on his part. He turned back to his computer only to see her walking towards him. A fanfare rang loud through his head and he started to hum the first thing that came to him, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison. The old time video playing though his head only with him in place of Roy, sitting on the bench waiting for his girl to come back to him. She was beside him now and he didn鈥檛 want her to be. He could only think that he was going to make a fool of himself.

鈥淪o you coming then?鈥
鈥淗uh? What? Going where?鈥
鈥淵ou should read your mail more often instead of sitting there singing 70鈥檚 songs! Are you coming for a drink?鈥
鈥淎ye alright then. Where we going? The Basement, Skye, Robinson鈥檚?鈥
鈥淲herever you fancy suits me.鈥
鈥淎lright then, lets head.鈥

He got up, grabbed his coat and headed through the doors behind her. The music started again and even though he tried to stop himself from humming, he just couldn鈥檛 help it. His humming just kept getting louder and he was just about to bust into song when she said,

鈥淒on鈥檛 be getting ahead of yourself, I know what you鈥檙e humming. This is just two colleagues going for lunch together. There is nothing in it. Yet.鈥
