Colin Dardis
Colin Dardis resides in Belfast where he currently hosts a monthly poetry night in the Safehouse Gallery and is a member of the performance group 'The Belfast Poets'. He is also the editor for Speech Therapy, a small journal focusing on new poetry from the North of Ireland. Previously, Colin has been a co-ordinator of Poetic Splendour, a monthly performance poetry night in Belfast. His poem 'Perhaps' was short listed for the Edit Red 2006 Writer's Choice Award for Poetry.

The Cap Fits by Colin Dardis

鈥淵ou have to wear a hat
with the eyebrows still showing,鈥 she said;
so I pulled up my cap
and immediately felt
more handsome than any reflection of mine
could compliment me on.
Of course, the hat was my fa莽ade,
a little extra make-up
executed to conceal insecurities,
a cover-up foundation of green material,
designed to turn the ordinary wearer
into something resembling fashion.
Of course, I wore a beanie hat
years before it became fashionable to do so,
to keep the rain from off my head.
You see, I can鈥檛 stand carrying umbrellas.
