Carolyn O'Connell
Carolyn O'Connell

I live in Richmond, Surrey, having moved there from Central London two years ago and I have family connections and friends in all four provinces of Ireland. I am a member of the Richmond Writers circle. I have been writing for several years and my poems have appeared in magazines in England and on London's busses. 'Between Bamboo' was published in 2000 and I am working towards a collection.

Chapel Rock by Carolyn O'Connell

The water turns blue then green,
then clears to white revealing
a grey shadow beneath the sand.
Released, the river spreads
over fans of watercress weed
to meet the waves at Chapel Rock.

The vaulted entrance of a church
rises, draped in weed, and boys
swim out to stand on the apex.
They urge each other into dares,
diving into the copper tainted sea
unaware of the lost mine,
the memories of St Pirran鈥檚 Rock.
