John Bowdidge

I was born in 1938. I am now retired but used to run my own business as a consultant on the environmental impact of thermal insulation products and for thermal insulation products generally. Before that I worked with Rockwool Limited. I have spent years on various National and International standards committees writing thermal insulation standards.

Excavation by John Bowdidge

Shattered his sleep by bright Sunlight

Broken the bonds of perpetual night

Awake Old Harry, full seven feet beneath

Sees the day through the iron diggers teeth

Saxon warrior, no more at rest,

A sword against his armoured chest

With the rumble from on high,

He stirs to see the modern sky.

Stop and go Jim at his JCB,

Eating bread and drinking tea,

No thought of the hole that he'd just dug,

A place for his crusts and the dregs from his mug

Stands now the ancient figure out

To give poor Jim a Saxon clout;

He holds Jim now with sightless eye,

The airless lungs breathe a sigh.

Courageous Jim, in awful plight,

Astride his digger, he will Old Harry fight;

Belching diesel, Jim's Dragon stands

With bucket full of gravel sands.

Wields Harry his sword, as in times long by ,

Raising his blade to the pale blue sky

The rusted sword is corroded through

Poor Harry now is broken too.

At the edge of the hole his balance can't save,

With another step back he falls in the grave.

Jim fills in the hole, there is no one to mourn,

Old Harry in pieces was already long gone.
