Suzanne Maxwell

My name is Suzanne and I have had a passion for words, and putting them together, for as long as I can remember. I was born in Belfast but moved to Carrickfergus when I was seven, and I am still living here, although I have since 'built' my own Innisfree.

I work full-time as a primary school teacher in a school for children with special educational needs, and it is both exhausting and fun!

My poetry very much reflects my mood and mirrors my experiences. I have submitted a few poems before for inclusion in anthologies and recently won a poetry competition that a friend suggested I enter. Please be gentle with the honesty I express yet honest about what you read. Thank you.

Little Girl Lost by Suzanne Maxwell

I鈥檓 here,
And every day it鈥檚 just the same.
You see me, think you know me, know my name.
I wake, I work, I talk, I smile, I sleep,
I package up the secrets that I keep.
I know my way around your world so well,
You know the surface of my fragile shell.
The outside of the girl you think you know
Conceals much more than it could ever show.
The anger that I cannot bear to feel,
The broken heart that cannot seem to heal.
The ugly words I鈥檒l never, ever say,
The hateful thoughts that will not go away.
The questions that I do not dare to ask,
The frightened face that hides behind the mask.
The guilt and shame that eats away inside
Is etched along the scars I try to hide.
You see the girl who plays within your light,
But miss the one her darkness hides from sight.
So hidden by the shadows that are cast
By light that cannot penetrate the past.
She鈥檚 lost, she鈥檚 me, abandoned, gagged and bound,
And no one knows, so how can I be found?
