The Midas Touch
It rained all day,
across the fields the hills had disappeared,
great swathes of mist
like finest gauze
swept over crest and hollow,
and the land sighed with regret
for the lack of heat
as roses dipped on the garden wall.

But just before evening turned to night
a sheet of gold spread over the hill,
wrapped the sheep in warm embrace,
coaxed the horses from under the hedge,
bathed the cattle in luminous light,
as the world transformed
gave thanks to the Lord
for the gift of sun
before end of day,
and I stared in awe at Nature’s grace
as the hills turned copper and rust and red
at the whim of God.
