Junior Doctors – Your Life In Their Hands: Lucy Holmes

Lucy Holmes

F1 doctor, 24, Essex

Designated department – Gastro

Lucy, 24, like Suzy, is the first person in her family to become a doctor. Brought up in Essex, she turned to medicine to help find a cure for her sister's life-threatening disease, Cystic Fibrosis. Ever since her sister was diagnosed, Lucy has been involved in her ongoing care and it was her that inspired Lucy to go into medicine.

Dr Holmes' first rotation will be in Gastro. The Gastro ward treats alcoholics and patients with digestive problems, bowel and liver disease. This will be both demanding and emotionally draining for caring Lucy.

When Lucy gets stressed she gets cooking. She can often be found in the kitchen whipping up cakes for everyone and loves throwing dinner parties for her friends. Lucy is also an avid runner. She has run marathons to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis and last year took part in the Great North Run.

Why did you want to get into medicine?

I've got a little sister, Sophie, who was diagnosed with Cystic fibrosis. That obviously encompasses an awful lot of care and treatment. And when she came home from hospital during that time I've been involved with her care and it made me want to go further with that type of thing – and medicine is the perfect way to do that.

What are the best and worst things about being a junior doctor?

Having worked so hard to become a doctor it is finally realising your dream and learning so much all the time. It's hard when you see someone upset because of a hard diagnosis. It is difficult to remain detached from the situation and not get upset yourself.

What would you like to see a cure for or be credited with for a cure within your career?

If I could cure anything it would be to take Cystic Fibrosis out of the world. That would be my dream.

Does it ever feel like you are off duty?

Some days it's difficult to walk away from work and not think about what you've seen or done. You can put yourselves in their shoes but, on the other hand, I try to make sure I use my time when I'm not at work to do things I enjoy.
