"The NHS discount is a perk of the job!"
33-year-old drama graduate Mel talks about her unusual occupation...
How did you get started in tissue donation?
I tried my hand at embalming, before seeing an advert in a paper for a job in Wrexham Tissue Bank. I went for an unofficial tour and decided that’s where I’d like to work.
What attracted you to the job?
It wasn’t going to be a ‘run of the mill’ 9-5 office job; there was lots of driving, and it was a physical, hands-on job that was interesting and mind provoking
Tell us a surprising fact about tissue donation…
I was surprised that cryopreserved tissue can be stored for up to 10 years before it’s used.
What are your interests outside of work?
Snowboarding, adrenalin sports, scuba diving and holidays.
Did you think you’d stay in the job?
Yes forever, but then I also expected to have my 'first car' forever - I was 21 and naive!
What are the perks of the job?
The NHS discount in Subway!
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Earning millions (obviously not in Tissue Services) and living a ‘Richard Branson’ lifestyle.
