Puzzle No. 548鈥� Monday 19 August
I have two haggis in the fridge. One weighs twice as much as the other. In cooking them, I know that the time taken to reach the same centre temperature goes as the square of the diameter. Both haggis are plunged into boiling water and left boiling. The smaller one is ready after one hour at which point I start playing my bagpipes. I stop playing when the second one is done. How long does my long long-suffering family have to endure the bagpipes?

The smaller one has diameter d so the bigger one has diameter 2^(1/3)d. Time for the first is 1 hour so time for the second is therefore 2^(2/3) hours = 1.59 hours, ie 35 minutes longer
