Yesterday was the Summer Solstice and at midday the sun was at its highest. In Bedford there's a 10-metre-tall flagpole beside a playing field and six months ago its noonday shadow across the field was 39 metres long. What will be the length of the shadow at noon today?

Bedford is at latitude 52.14 degrees.The angle of tilt of the Earth is 23.5 degrees

Winter length of shadow is 10 tan(52.14 + 23.5) = 39 metres (as given) *Summer length of shadow is 10 tan(52.14 - 23.5) = 5.5m

* Note you can solve this without knowing the latitude of Bedford as we're told the length of the winter solstice shadow.
