Today Puzzle #539

Puzzle No. 539– Tuesday 6 August

Having won the Open, Shane Lowry is now playing a 235 yard hole and tees off with a drive of 128 yards. He only makes half the distance of the previous shot for all subsequent ones. Assuming he has to make a distance of 235 yards exactly, (i.e. the ball goes over the hole if hit too hard), how many shots does it take to complete the hole?

The distances reached are 128, 128+64=192, 128+64+32=224, 128+64+32+16=240. At this point Shane has overhit the hole so subsequent shots are back and forth ... So, 128+64+32+16-8+4-2+1=235. It requires 8 shots in total.
