In June 1816, a bloody skirmish erupted between a colony of ragged, half-starved Scottish colonists and a band of M茅tis buffalo hunters in Seven Oaks, in what is now Winnipeg, Canada. It was the opening salvo in the quintessential North American struggle between a free-booting wilderness existence and a new economy of barbed-wire and borders.
