Travelling to Maritime Canada, a region where Gaelic language, song, music and dance have survived and adapted to create a vibrant new culture. This culture arose from the bitter experience of the clearances, a relatively new phenomenon in Highland emigration, in which people were forcibly evicted from their homes and scattered abroad.
This programme examines the complex forces behind the notorious stereotypes of the clearances and looks at their human aspect. It also celebrates the unique mosaic of Maritme Canada and asks what the future holds in an era of economic decline and out-migration.
