The story of the forgotten emigration: the colonisation of the southernmost tip of Argentina and Chile by Highland shepherds and their families.

Journeying through Patagonia and Tierra Del Fuego Donald Morrison talks to the descendants of the
families recruited to the huge sheep ranches there during the wild days of the late nineteenth century. The life of the shepherds was gruelling and dangerous. Unbearably hot summers were followed by terrible winter blizzards which could kill the unwary.

Donald Morrison hears the extraordinary story of one Highlander who, caught in a snowstorm, only saved himself by shooting his horse, gutting it, then sheltering inside the carcase for two days and nights. However, the colonisation of the pampas had a much less heroic side too with the deliberate genocide of the native peoples; a genocide in which some Gaels fully participated.
