Beatha Ghlaiste (Imprisoned)

Episode 19 of 20

Scotland sends more people to prison per head of population than any other country in Europe. But are more prisons really the answer?

Tha barrachd den mh貌r-shluagh air a chur dhan phr矛osan ann an Alba gach bliadhna, na ann an d霉thaich eile san Roinn Eorpa. Thathar a' meas gu bheil 8000 ann am pr矛osanan na h-Alba an-dr脿sta, agus fiu 's aig an sin chan eil r霉m gu leor ann dhaibh, is na pr矛osanan loma-lan mar a tha iad, gun r霉m gu le貌r annta. Ach an e pr矛osanan 霉ra am freagairt ge-t脿? No am bu ch貌ir dhuinn coimhead air d貌ighean eile air an 脿ireamh-phr矛osanach a lughdachadh? A bharrachd air an sin tha a' mh貌r-chuid de na priosanaich ann an Alba air a bhith fo ghlais roimhe. Ach carson a tha an suideachadh cho dona san d霉thaich seo? Le bhith a' bruidhinn ris na daoine a b' 脿bhaist a bhith an s脿s anns an t-seann shiostam agus an fheadhainn a tha ag obair anns na pr矛osanan san latha an diugh, bidh Trusadh a' sireadh an t-slighe air adhart.

Scotland sends more people to prison per head of population than any other country in Europe. There are approximately 8000 prisoners behind bars in this country, and the prisons are full to capacity, with overcrowding a major problem. Are new prisons really the answer? Or should we look at other options to reduce the prison population? Most of Scotland's prisoners have been imprisoned before, so why is the situation so bad in this country? By speaking to those who used to work in the old prison system, and those who work in the prisons today, this programme explores the way ahead.
