Andy realises he's got to do something proactive to mend his strained relationship with Ruth and decides today is the day he's going to save his marriage. Ruth is touched by the idea but before any romancing can begin the day is knocked off kilter. First Joanne arrives home earlier than expected, then Ruth has to go to work. Not to be deterred, Andy willingly takes up Joanne's offer for advice about how to make the day go really well. However, their differing views on what to buy for Ruth cause problems for Andy. Joanne advises something sexy but Andy picks out some gloves and a bag. Exasperated, Joanne swaps the present without Andy's knowledge. Ruth likes the gift but isn't pleased when she discovers it was Joanne's choice and not Andy's.

Andy challenges Joanne about swapping the gift but finds himself opening up to her about the problems he and Ruth are having. He's relieved to finally have someone to talk to who won't judge him. Ruth guesses that Andy has been talking to Joanne about intimate details of their relationship and confronts him. Andy can't help hitting back about all the things Ruth hasn't told him about her life. Ruth takes her anger out on Joanne but it's Andy who is shocked to the core by his wife's behaviour. He tells Ruth it's time she sorted herself out and books her an appointment with a psychiatrist. Ruth is aghast. As they argue, Andy informs Ruth he can't help but feel he's been conned. Their row ends on terrible terms as Andy heads off for the conference.

Ruth is anxious as Eilidh falls ill. She takes her to see Michael and hopes Andy will return. He does, but not immediately. Ruth wants to make things right and agrees to see the psychiatrist. Andy is grateful but it's evident the love has gone for him - how can the marriage survive?

Eileen and Raymond continue to bicker over various aspects of the baby - they debate whether they should know its sex, whether she should breast-feed and where the baby will sleep. A shared room is the only option. Raymond is unsettled by the idea, his unrequited feelings for Eileen playing on his mind. Meanwhile, Eileen realises she's being too harsh on Raymond thanks to a wise chat with Malcolm. She apologises and tells him she's grateful for their relationship as he's the love of her life. Raymond is struck - might his feelings be returned?

Scarlett misses a doctor's appointment to snare the nativity's leading role for Madonna - she wants this to be the best Christmas ever for her family but when will she learn to put her health first?
