Is streaming young pupils the best way to help them in class? One in six UK children is being streamed according to their ability by the age of seven, according to research by the Institute of Education. It suggests the oldest children in the year are more likely to be in the top classes. But critics say it has a negative effect on those in the bottom streams. So what is the best way to deal with mixed abilities? Do brighter pupils help motivate those needing to go at a slower pace? Is there a risk of labelling pupils a failure before they even turn eight?
