As the High Street faces yet another bout of contraction what does the decline of the local, independent, high street shops and the rise of 'clone towns' of identikit chains mean for the retail sector? Some experts have advocated government intervention to 'save' our high streets but would greater regulation and intervention be an expensive solution which might actually increase costs for consumers.
