In this episode Joe meets Jack Briggs and his girlfriend Lisa Leighton, who have recently purchased their first home together - an empty 1930s three-bedroom detached house near Derby. Jack is a plumber and is confident about managing the building work, but is looking for advice on how to keep on top of the budget. Joe introduces them to a couple who have successfully salvaged a derelict cottage and created a beautiful home in an idyllic location.

We find out about a property guardian scheme where people pay minimal rent to live in and care for vulnerable empty properties, and we accompany Dave Carter on his rounds as an empty property officer in north London.
