What the F: The Story of Feminism and Pop

Gemma Cairney asks what feminism means today and asks whether super sexed-up female stars are being empowered or exploited.

Gemma Cairney asks what feminism means today and questions whether our super sexed-up female stars are empowered or exploited?

Miley says she's one of the biggest, Lily Allen's comeback was inspired by it, uber feminist and bestselling writer Caitlin Moran has been named one of the most influential people on Twitter. Everybody is talking about it. But what does the word 'feminism' really mean?

'F word' campaigns and discussions are all over the internet, newspapers and magazines, and the debates rage on. For both young men and women, the issues around male and female equality can be hard to navigate and it's sometimes difficult to see the relevance of what can feel like an outdated word - in a survey by Netmums last year, over half of mums with teenage daughters (51%) said their child was not aware of the feminist movement. Last year, however, the discussion exploded in pop music, with opinions swirling around Miley, Beyonce and other female stars and their right to get naked, flaunt their sexuality and generally misbehave.

Gemma investigates the relationship between feminism and pop - she talks to stars including Professor Green, Nina Nesbitt, Lauren Mayberry and Jack Harries, asking what the word means to them; and hears from performance artist and activist Byrony Kimmings. She lifts the lid on the issues that really matter when it comes to F for Feminism...
