The Scottish Paediatric Retrieval Service provides a unique and vital service at the heart of Scotland's NHS. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this team of specialist doctors and nurses are on call to ensure that critically ill children receive life-saving treatment wherever they are in Scotland.
In this programme, the team take a call from Raigmore hospital in Inverness, where a baby girl has suffered an unexplained seizure and is struggling to breathe. The retrieval team call in the air ambulance to get her to the intensive care unit in Edinburgh.
Meanwhile, in Wishaw, a young boy is admitted to hospital after a viral infection takes a rapid turn for the worse. He needs to get to Yorkhill hospital in Glasgow, which has with some of the most advanced life-support systems in the UK. Elsewhere, a 6 week old baby in Dundee needs to be moved to intensive care when a viral infection turns serious.
