Thug sliabh Charn Tóchair a ainm don cheantar. Is é an chiall atá le ‘tóchar’ ná ‘bealach’, nó ‘bóthar ardaithe’.Ìý De réir an bhéaloidis, is tagairt é sin don bhealach a rachadh daoine agus iad ag fágáil na háite, ag dul ar imirce.Ìý Inniu, baineann siúlóirà feidhm as an sliabh. Carntogher is a small rural area outside Maghera, in South Derry.Ìý It is sometimes called Slaughtneil.Ìý It is a traditional farming area, with mountains, loughs and ancient woodland, as well as great biodiversity.Ìý Wildlife that can be seen in the area includes buzzards, rare butterflies and red kites.
The area was named for the mountain that shelters the community – Carn Tóchair.Ìý The word ‘tóchar’ means a path or raised causeway.Ìý According to local folklore, that refers to the route that people would take up the mountain when leaving the area, to emigrate.Ìý Today, walkers and hikers use the mountain, and there are many paths to take, with points of archaeological interest dotted over the mountain.
