Stories
A Sailors Sacrifice
British sailor George Hinkins died a war hero putting his life on the line to save the lives of his shipmates in the face of a terrifying suicide mission by a Japanese kamikaze pilot who was attacking his ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Now, 70 years on, Bill Turnbull meets his son David to learn about how his Christian faith has led him to his mission to seek reconciliation with Japan and to pay tribute to his father’s sacrifice and bravery. After a lifelong quest for information about the identity of the kamikaze pilot, David finally receives some unexpected and remarkable news.
Captives Hymn
Pam Rhodes meets Jane Elgey who was interned in prisoner of war camps in the Far East at the age of 12. Pam also meets Margie Caldicott whose mother and grandmother were also interned with Jane. We hear the story of the Captives’ Hymn written by fellow prisoner Margaret Dryburgh and there’s a special performance of the hymn by Chichester Women’s Vocal Orchestra.
A Family Remembers
The Jones – a family of British and Japanese heritage – embark on a journey of discovery to learn about VJ Day and the role their loved ones played in the war in the Pacific. Along with their two children, Kevin and Kana Jones visit the Anglo Japanese Peace Grove at the , Staffordshire to remember those who lost their lives in the Second World War and to remember Kana’s grandfather who was captured by US forces and interrogated in an internment camp in California.  As a tribute to their great grandfather and other victims of war, their children Talitha and Sammy place origami cranes, a symbol of peace in Japanese culture, at the Arboretum’s Hiroshima stone.
