Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

Sometimes it鈥檚 the little things that are the big things. If you鈥檝e ever had a tiniest speck of glass in your finger or shared a silent hotel room with mosquito you can testify to that. At a hairs breadth over 5 foot tall I鈥檓 a little thing height wise, growing up when I would moan about my modest stature my Dad would remind me 鈥楾here are big lumps of coal our Katie but only little diamonds.鈥櫶 I鈥檇 like hope I鈥檓 more diamond than mozzy, especially if it means taking after my equally vertically challenged but massively marvellous Mother, who celebrated her birthday last week.

My mum will kill me for telling you, but her birthday was a big one, it was her 70th! I remember her last big birthday very well, her 60th. I remember it but she doesn鈥檛. She spent her big day in the intensive care ward of our local hospital. It鈥檚 funny how when you鈥檙e going through something so big and traumatic as watching someone you love fight a big illness it鈥檚 the things become the big things. Not just the little fluctuations in the heart rate monitor or a tiny rise in temperature but little things like a nurse remembering my name when I came to visit, or a little thing like letting me squirt my mum鈥檚 perfume on her wrists so she didn鈥檛 smell of hospitals and when things looked very big and scary indeed allowing me and my brother and my Dad to stay quietly by her side while we watched and waited. I remember crying because the gown they鈥檇 put her in said in very tiny print 鈥楬ospital property鈥 2 little words that really upset me, silly isn鈥檛 it, the nurses made sure she didn鈥檛 wear one of those gowns again.

They say that the Devil is in the detail but I think we don鈥檛 need to look very hard to find God dwelling in the detail. The big love of God was certainly to be found in the little things those nurses did and said. They say small is beautiful and it鈥檚 the thought that counts. And sometimes even the smallest of gestures can be the most beautiful and thoughtful, a little thing received in a big way and the quietest whisper of care can sound like the loudest shout of love.

So many happy returns Mum, and here鈥檚 to the next big birthday!
