Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, rabbi of Golders Green Synagogue and CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy:

One afternoon, when I鈥檇 only been a rabbi for a year, I had an unexpected call that transformed my professional life.听 Would I stand in for a rabbi who was sick and teach a class of women?听 I agreed, and my career teaching Jewish ideas to adults was launched.听

But I hit a snag.听 I couldn鈥檛 imagine how I would come up with anything that people would find interesting.听 So I reused material I鈥檇 heard from my own teachers.听 I felt like a bit of fraud for a while, although I always admitted that the ideas weren鈥檛 my own.听 But after a bit, something unexpected happened 鈥 I was beginning to come up with my own ideas and gradually created my own style, as well a collection of truly awful jokes.

A great thinker once said 鈥 if you walk in the footprints of others, you won鈥檛 make any of your own.听 It鈥檚 a lovely thought 鈥 we first need to imitate others, develop our confidence in their shadow and only then strike out on our own.听 It鈥檚 what I did years ago 鈥 and I鈥檇 recommend it to anyone.

Throughout my career as a rabbi, teacher and as the father of a large family, I鈥檝e noticed that getting the right balance between individual expression and conformity can be really tough.听

We live in a selfish age with a huge emphasis on individuality.听 But at the same time, there鈥檚 lot of pressure to conform to the dress codes and values of others.

This talk of individuality reminds me of a true story about a great rabbi called Zusha.听听 As he neared the end of his life, his students noticed that he was afraid.听 鈥楻abbi鈥, they said, 鈥榶ou鈥檝e lived a life filled with good deeds, so you鈥檝e nothing to worry about鈥.听 Zusha turned to them and explained.听 鈥榃hen I get to heaven, God won鈥檛 ask me: 鈥淲hy weren鈥檛 you more like Moses or King David?鈥澨 Instead, God will look right through me and ask: 鈥淶usha, why weren鈥檛 you more like Zusha?鈥澨 And then what will I say?鈥

I think about this story often.听 It really captures the importance of living a life not for oneself, but being oneself.听 So here鈥檚 a thought, Chris.听 We all know that you鈥檙e 100% your own man, but when that moment comes, God might just ask you why you weren鈥檛 even more like Chris.听 How will you answer?
