Imagine a 100th birthday celebration with 17,000 women involved - well it's happening this year, all over Scotland! Throughout 2017, members of the great 'all girl' institution the Scottish Women's Institute are marking its centenary. This lighthearted observational documentary, led by women's rights advocate Christina McGonigle, seeks out some of the magic ingredients that make up this successful recipe for fun and friendship, and catches a slice of the fun!
The SWI - formerly known as the longer Scottish Women's "Rural" Institute - was set up by an East Lothian farmer's wife - and suffragette - to encourage social opportunities, education and skill sharing for ordinary women.
Christina explores some of this history as she joins some of its 21st-century members to find out how the original ethos is still just as relevant today. With good humour and fitting competitive spirit, she hangs her dignity at the door as she mucks in with dancing classes, joins an inner city group for a sex talk, participates in a rural show and accompanies ladies of some of Scotland's most remote institutes for a special centenary rally.
