The Best Kept Awards
60 years ago, a man from Belfast had an idea. Little did he know that that idea would then go on to transformed the look and feel of places, towns and villages all over Northern Ireland. The Best Kept Awards were the brainchild of the late Professor Arthur Musket, and this week there was a special ceremony marking the anniversary.
Squirreltober
October, or should that be Squirreltober, is a full month dedicated to Red Squirrels which are held in great esteem, especially by the dedicated Glens of Antrim group. They've been organising walks, talks and storytelling to celebrate these little arboreal animals.
Enniskillen Gaol
Enniskillen courthouse was the site of the original gaol and sessions house in the town, before being replaced by a later gaol in Gaol Square in 1821. Even then it was very primitive and any time spent there could be a death sentence from disease, malnutrition or the other inmates. On Monday, there will be a talk in Lisnaskea uncovering some of the stories from inside these walls.
Castlecaulfield In Bloom
There have been celebrations in Castlecaulfield in Tyrone for the last few weeks – and with good reason. Having already won Ulster in Bloom and Britain in Bloom titles for the best kept village, they recently went on to take part in, and win, the international in bloom award in Canada.Â
