Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Remona Aly, Freelance journalist and editor:

It was a hazy late afternoon in spring, on the eve of the Muslim month of fasting, when I was stuffing my face at a Bar Mitzvah. I enjoyed giving my soul sustenance at this coming of age ceremony, while heralding the Islamic holy month in a London synagogue. The rabbi, in his welcome speech, wished me a blessed Ramadan, and added, 鈥淲e hope you enjoy your last supper!鈥 I wolfed down the challah, offered sunset prayers in a quiet corner of the synagogue, then zoomed across town to the mosque for Ramadan bonus prayers.

I knew my experiences that night were special, and not to be taken for granted, especially in a world where conflict can splinter friendship and peace. Yet it鈥檚 precisely real-life encounters such as these that I think are worth remembering during Radio 2鈥檚 Faith in the world week.

Like when I visited the grand mosque in Paris, which was built to honour the tens of thousands of Muslims who fought for France in World War 1. I stepped through the great prayer hall and along the turquoise tiled courtyard, knowing that below my feet, the underground caverns of the mosque provided sanctuary for hundreds of Jews fleeing the Nazis. They were under the protection of the rector of Paris Mosque, Si Kaddour Benghabrit. When I look at his black and white photograph, as he sits with an air of calm, his hands folded, I want to reach in and grasp them and thank him for his humanity.

Too often I feel at a loss. I read a news story about hate, violence, and in the gloom I ask: where is the hope? But it can take one person, one story to transform an entire universe of feeling.

The American Muslim scholar, Dalia Mogahed says, 鈥淩emember this: for all the ugliness in the world, there is far more beauty. For all the cruelty, there is far more kindness. And remember one more thing: Those who remind you of this simple fact - keep them close.鈥

I will keep them close, whether it鈥檚 an old photograph of a peace ambassador like Si Kaddour Benghabrit or a friend of another faith wishing me well in mine. Because to survive the darkest shadows, all I need is one candle.
