Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

Ìý

It’s a very exciting week for the Belovski household. ÌýIn a couple of days, our eldest daughter Michali will marry her fiancé Yoav. ÌýIt’s the first family wedding of my daughter’s generation and family and friends are arriving from around the country and overseas to be with them on their special day. Ìý
Ìý
Jewish weddings are low on formalities and high on joy – the wedding service is short and is followed by eating, dancing, singing and a wealth of opportunities to bless the happy couple with a healthy, loving and spiritual future. ÌýThe brief ceremony takes place under a chuppah – a decorated canopy open on four sides – symbolising the open, welcoming home the couple plan to build.

Ìý

They stand beneath the chuppah, if they are so fortunate, with their parents, celebrating the formation of a new partnership and the opportunity to hand the beautiful values and aspirations of Judaism to a new generation.
Ìý
Over the years, I’ve officiated at over 100 weddings. ÌýAt one – held on a golf course – the groom arrived in a helicopter which landed very close to the ceremony: the rotors blew down the chuppah and showered the guests with dirt. ÌýAt another, the bride’s father collapsed during the ceremony, although, fortunately, he recovered quickly, and at still another – on a very hot day – the bride started to wobble, but we caught her before she actually fainted. ÌýHappily, both weddings went off without further hitches.Ìý
Ìý

Ìý

The first wedding at which I officiated was that of my brother and sister-in-law more than 20 years ago. But Michali and Yoav’s will be different, as I will be the presiding rabbi as well as father of the bride. ÌýI hope I’ll hold it all together: balancing my family responsibilities with my professional duties at a very emotional time.
Ìý
Every wedding is wonderful, every bride and groom radiant.Ìý I’ve often noticed that people the hosts think it’s their job to entertain the guests, but that’s not a Jewish approach to weddings.Ìý I hope that our guests have a lovely day, but it’s actually a mitzvah, a Jewish religious obligation, to ensure that the bride and groom are the ones rejoicing.Ìý We will do our best to sing, dance, juggle and joke to ensure that Michali and Yoav have the time of their lives.
