Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

You've only to look at the shape of me to know that I enjoy food. Because of my lifestyle, I often have to eat on my own. And for me, eating a rushed meal on my own is never an enjoyable experience. It鈥檚 about as meaningful as re-fueling at a filling station.

Naomi Levy in her book 'Searching for the Soul' shares a story which helps to make my point.

13 year old Jared was about to celebrate his bar-mitzvah. His grandmother asked him to choose his present. He could have asked for anything and she would have given it to him.

You can just imagine how delighted and proud she was when he asked her to make him a cookbook with all her own traditional, home-cooking recipes in it.

She spent almost a year writing out the most popular family recipes in her own hand. Along with the recipes she recorded stories about special occasions and special people past meals reminded her of.聽 The recipes became a unique recording of family traditions too.

In the introduction to her home-made cook book she told her grandson that food is designed to bring people together in friendship. Meals are meant to create feelings of warmth towards the people we are with. They should be celebrations of life. 鈥淲hat better way to show appreciation and gratitude for the friendship and love of those we call family,鈥 she wrote.

Memories of my mother baking home-made bread and roasting chickens in an iron oven hanging from a crook over a turf fire come back to me now. Isn鈥檛 it funny how aromas linger longest in the memory?

No wonder Jesus, on the night before he died, had a last meal with his closest friends, and pleaded with them to 鈥淒o this in memory of me.鈥

Eating on my own convinces me that sharing food makes both the sharing and the food extra special.聽 I believe our get-togethers around a table are exactly what Jesus wanted us to do. When we share food, conversation and friendship we live out what a family should be.

Sitting around a table enjoying stories and home-cooked food is the holiest thing a family will ever do.
