Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Richard Coles:
At the age of fifty seven, in a sedentary life, one in which available cake is measured by the kilo, if the call for Love Island came, I would not be able to say with confidence that I am beach-ready. Actually, I haven鈥檛 been beach-ready since Hunstanton 1969, half a century and eleven stone ago. I blame idleness, a metabolic rate that has slowed to the speed of poured toffee, the rich diet my privileged and empowered existence has afforded. With great power comes great responsibility; and the time has come for me to take it, because the health sirens are sounding.听
I am obese, pre-diabetic, I no longer bend to pick up a coin of less than a pound in value - for the first time in my life, I am on a diet. And it is like diving into a bubbling cauldron of anxiety. I had no idea just how many diets there are out there, one for every predicament you can imagine. Diabetic? Vegan? Prehistoric? All tastes catered for, but I just want to lose weight. I told a friend and she set me up on the Quito diet, which I misunderstood to mean the capital of Ecuador, and was rather hoping for ceviche and granadilla; but no, not that kind of keto, I realised as she handed over a sack of weapons-grade muesli.听
The mortification of the flesh was once a standard practise in Christianity. It meant hair shirts, self-flagellation, austere fasting. To modern sensibilities that seems sinister and life denying, but our culture鈥檚 obsession with diet and gym and running and iron man competitions, is not so different, no less mortifying, only it鈥檚 intended for our physical rather than our spiritual benefit. I don鈥檛 believe you can separate the physical and the spiritual so neatly, which is why, I think, diets so often get a bit mystical, and boast of benefits not only for our bodies but for our general wellbeing. And it occurs to me that flesh-hating ascetics and Love Island contestants have something in common, a lack of balance between these two essential aspects of existence. Life in is fullness is the glory of God, said St Irenaeus, body and soul. Bring on the muesli.
