50 years of Disability; Job Diaries; Virtual Reality

Is Virtual Reality gaming about to hit the mass market in a way it never has before?

As part of our 50th birthday celebration we'll take a look at disability. It's half a century since the Chronically Sick and Disabled Act was passed, which compelled Local Authorities to offer welfare services to their disabled citizens. You & Yours has focused on stories about disability and care from the beginning; the first ever episode carried an item about arthritis. We'll hear from three of our listeners about disability and care in 1970 and what鈥檚 changed, plus we'll speak to the former Home Secretary and Labour peer - Lord Blunkett.

The full impact of the Coronavirus on jobs and unemployment still remains to be seen. But new figures given to You and Yous by the conciliation service, Acas, reveal a sharp rise in redundancy related calls this year. Acas gives employees and employers advice on workplace rights, rules and best practice. It says calls to it's helpline rose by 160 percent over the summer compared to last year. Since the Spring, we've been following the stories of some of our listeners who've found themselves out of work during the pandemic. Today hear from Matt in Solihull, a warehouse worker who lives alone and had to shield, because of a medical condition.

And... there was a time in the early 90s where you couldn't turn on the TV, watch a movie, or pick up a paper without hearing about virtual reality or VR.
Since then there have been several efforts to try and bring the technology to the consumer, and that's happened to a certain extent. There are around 170 million users worldwide, but compared to the 2.5 billion gamers - you can see it's not quite reached the mass market.
We'll talk about the latest kit and how it could change the popularity of VR moving forward.
