The Encephalitis Society

We are the only UK charity that provides direct support and information to people affected by encephalitis, and to their family and friends. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) is caused either by an infection invading the brain, or through the immune system attacking the brain in error. Encephalitis is a thief – it can steal memories, personalities, and abilities we take for granted: concentration, attention, thinking, judgement, inhibition. For many, there are additional challenges such as epilepsy and levels of fatigue so great that returning to normal working or school life can be difficult.

Providing support and information

Providing support and information
Our expert support team provide information and resources to families who have been affected by encephalitis. By making a donation, you will help support families like Catherine’s who rely on us for reassurance and hope at one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Accelerating awareness

Accelerating awareness
500,000 adults and children are affected globally by the condition each year, yet 78% of people have never heard of it. We raise awareness through campaigns such as World Encephalitis Day (22 February), to help build a world where encephalitis matters.

Driving research

Driving research
We work with world-leading experts on encephalitis research, helping to develop new life-changing approaches to the diagnosis and treatment. We also provide seed funding and bursaries, helping to improve the knowledge and understanding of this condition globally.
