Pause For Thought

How are you doing? I鈥檓 tired. I鈥檝e been trying to do some exercise, stay off the booze and eat well, but ten days into the New Year and it's really hard going. My knees hurt.听I could use a drink.听And I do love cake. It鈥檚 dawning on me - as it does this time every year - that I might never be in the shape that all the pushers of workouts, diets and detoxes tell me I should be.听I鈥檓 going to fail again, in their eyes.
听
Which is too much like my schooldays, when I really wanted to be good at football but wasn鈥檛, and the teachers put all the so-called no-hopers in a team and made us play the cool kids. It was horrible. Humiliating. And it sort of happened again the last time I tried to get fit for a New Year by playing five-a-side, when I found myself in a team of knackered, wheezy geezers 4-0 down to blokes who had clearly been players in their day.听Long-hidden emotions came flooding back. There were tears, Zoe. Then something beautiful happened. The referee said that was not the final score,听because this was a new kind of league听like weightwatchers with a ball. We'd been weighed before we played and would be given goals according to how much we鈥檇 lost in a week. Four goals, for us. They got none. So it was actually four-four. We鈥檇 got a draw. We jumped around like we鈥檇 won the Champions League, and what did the others do?
听
They laughed and applauded, because we'd got to know and love each other a bit and there were new rules now. The Bible says there is no rich or poor when you鈥檙e standing before God.听Everyone is equal.听So it suggests to me we should love each other equally. And when we dare to do so,听the rules of the world are turned upside down. Or as Jesus told his mates: the first shall be last and the last shall be first.听So when I feel like I鈥檓 4-0 down again, tired and hurting, failing somebody else's ideal, I try to remember: I don鈥檛 have to play by those rules any more,听because I believe each of us is loved and loveable听and love evens up the score.
