Care home evictions, Bees in the roof, Data sharing

People in care homes threatened with eviction when relatives make complaints. What to do if bees take up residence in your home. Are data protection regulations working?

We've been reporting for many years on how people in care homes have been threatened with eviction when their relatives raised concerns about their care. Research for You and Yours before the pandemic in 2019, showed that 2,000 care home residents were evicted, some of them after their relatives made complaints. The charity, the Relatives and Residents Association, says the problem hasn't gone away despite the lockdowns of the last two years. We hear how a 96-year-old woman was served notice after her daughter challenged visiting restrictions in place at the time. We also speak to Lord Hunt of Kings Heath about why he thinks the Government and the regulator, the Care Quality Commission, need to make changes to the system so residents and their families don't fear reprisals if they make complaints.

We take a look at what to do if bees take up residence in your home. We speak to a listener who has honey bees nestling in her roof and has found out to her cost that she can't make an insurance claim. We also hear from Anne Rowberry, President of the Bee Keepers Association, and Ian Fuller from the bee removal company, Swarm Catcher.

In the last six months we've reported on complaints from people who say they're being bombarded with junk mail and spam from companies without giving their consent. This shouldn't be happening because by law, no company or organisation can hold, swap or sell our details unless we say so. We speak to James Walker, Chief Executive of Rightly, a company that helps people find out how their data is being used. We also hear from Suzanne Gordon, Director of Public Advice at the Information Commissioner's Office.
