Spanish farms

Spanish farms
Eating less meat has been suggested as one of the best ways in which we can help the environment. Aggressive farming has been shown to destroy natural habitats, and the air-miles such meat travels from farm to plate is also a cause for concern.

In Spain, the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, wants the public to recognise the impact of megafarms on the environment, and encourages people to change their eating habits. Spain is one of the biggest meat-eating countries in the world, and the calls to limit meat-consumption has faced a furious backlash, not least from leading politicians.

Many farmers feel their livelihoods could be jeopardised by a reduction in meat eating, with some political parties saying that the state should not have a say in the population's eating habits.

Ann an 2020, bha iad air tuiteam airson dusan bliadhna an sreath a chèile agus tha figearan tràth a' sealltainn gur e crìonadh a chunnaicear ann an 2021 cuideachd. Mar thoradh air a seo, tha Riaghaltas na h-Eadailte air Achd an Teaghlaich a chur an sàs. 'S e achd ùr a tha seo a tha a' brosnachadh dhaoine gus clann a bhith aca. Na lùib tha creideas coitcheann, atharraichean a thaobh fòrladh màthaireil, faochadh bho chìsean agus leasachaidhean a thaobh cùram-chloinne. Ach a bheil gu leòr ann airson pàtran a thathas air a bhith a' faicinn airson bhliadhnaichean a-nis atharrachadh?

Birth rate in Italy

Birth rate in Italy
Italy's birth rate has been falling. In 2020, it fell for the 12th year in a row and early estimates for 2021 project a further decline. The average birth rate among Italian women is 1.17 births per individual. There are a few reasons for this; economic decline, unemployment, a shortage of nursey places and the difficulties women face when they want to work and have children.

The decline has resulted in the Italian Government introducing the Family Act. This is a new Act that aims to encourage people to have more children. It includes a universal payment, changes to maternity leave, tax breaks and improvements in childcare. Will it be enough to reverse the pattern of decline that Italy has been experiencing for years?
