A' cur chraobhan

A' cur chraobhan
Tha na dùbhlain a tha an lùib atharrachadh na gnàth-shìde a' ciallachadh atharrachadh dha mòran againn san dòigh sa bheil sinn a' caitheamh ar beatha agus a' dèiligeadh ris an àrainneachd. Mar phàirt dhe na h-amasan airson a bhith carbon neodrach ro 2050 tha poileasaidhean aig riaghaltasan na Cuimrigh agus na h-Alba gus barrachd chraobhan a chur gus ìrean carboin san àrainneachd a lùghdachadh. Ach, anns a' Chuimrigh tha dragh air nochdadh gu bheil talamh thuathanais ga cheannach airson a chur fo chraobhan le companaidhean ionmhais air sgàth buannachdan a thaobh cìsean agus tabhartasan a tha ri fhaighinn gus a bhith a' cur chraobhan a bhrosnachach. Chaill Ian O'Connor, tuathanach le teaghlach òg, a-mach air cothrom tuathanas faisg air a cheannach nuair a chaidh a reic ri companaidh ionmhais stèidhichte ann an Lunnainn aig prìs àrd airson craobhan a chur. 'S e cothrom dha Ian a bhiodh an seo tèarainteachd a thoirt dhan teaghlach leantainn orra sa ghnìomhachas. Ach tha riaghaltas na Cuimrigh a' ràdh ma tha targaidean uaine rin coileanadh gum feum 10% de thalamh àiteachais a chur fo chraobhan. Ann an Alba tha tuathanaich màil a' ràdh gu bheil iad ann an suidheachadh cugallach ma tha uachdarain airson talamh a reic airson craobhan ach tha Seonag Barbour, aig a bheil tuathanas ann Siorrachd Pheairt, air sealltainn gun gabh craobhan agus àiteachas obrachadh còmhla ann an dòigh buannachdail.

Tree-planting schemes

Tree-planting schemes
The challenges in dealing with climate change will mean changes for many of us. As part of their aims for carbon net zero before 2050 the governments of Wales and Scotland have policies aimed at expanding tree cover in their respective countries. However, in Wales there are concerns in rural farming communities that productive agricultural land will be lost as outside investment companies and other wealthy buyers look to offset their carbon emissions in return for tax breaks and grants associated with tree planting. Ian O'Connor, a farmer with a young family, lost out on an opportunity to buy a neighbouring farm after a London-based finance company, with plans for afforestation, out-bid him. For him this would have been an opportunity to provide long-term security for himself and his children should they want to continue in the industry. But the Welsh government points out that a change of 10% in land use from agriculture to forestry is necessary as part of measures to combat climate change. In Scotland tenant farmers say they feel particularly vulnerable to the rising demand for land for forestry and woodland but Seonag Barbour, who farms in Perthshire, says tree planting and agriculture can be compatible in the right conditions.
