An Litir Bheag 990
Bha mi ag innse dhuibh mu M.E.M. Donaldson agus an leabhar aice 鈥Wanderings in the Western Highlands and Islands鈥. Tha cunntas aice mu mar a fhuair na MacIntyres 鈥 Clann 鈥檌c an t-Saoir 鈥 an ainm.聽
Tha e a鈥 dol air ais do linn Shomhairle Mh貌ir. B鈥 esan ceannard G脿idhealach-Lochlannach. Bha e be貌 anns an d脿rna linn deug. Bha e ag iarraidh nighean R矛gh Mhanainn a ph貌sadh. Ach dhi霉lt a h-athair, R矛gh Amhlaibh, a chead. Cha do ghabh Somhairle ris an di霉ltadh. Agus fhuair e taic bho a bhr脿thair-dalta, Murchadh Mac N猫ill.
Bha Somhairle agus Amhlaibh a鈥 se貌ladh anns na birlinnean aca. Bha Murchadh air b貌rd birlinn Amhlaibh. Rinn e tuill anns an t-slige. L矛on e na tuill le 矛m airson an s脿l a chumail a-mach. Rinn e f脿sagan airson na tuill a l矛onadh nuair a dh鈥檉halbhadh an t-矛m.
R脿inig soitheach an R矛gh 脌ird nam Murchan. Bha i stoirmeil. Dh鈥檉halbh an t-矛m 脿s na tuill. Th貌isich uisge air aoidion a-steach.聽
Bha Somhairle faisg air l脿imh anns a鈥 bhirlinn aige fh猫in. Dh鈥檌arr Amhlaibh air Somhairle cobhair a dh猫anamh air. Dhi霉lt Somhairle sin gus am faigheadh e cead nighean Amhlaibh a ph貌sadh. Fhuair e cead.
Chuir Murchadh f脿sagan anns na tuill anns an t-slige. Chuir sin stad air an uisge faighinn a-steach. Bha Murchadh na shaor. Air s脿illibh sin, bha inneal-tollaidh aige.聽
始S e Clann an t-Saoir a chanadh daoine ris a鈥 chloinn aige. Tha sinn e貌lach orra an-diugh ann am Beurla mar 鈥MacIntyres鈥.听
Nise, tha d脿rna sgeul mu mar a th貌isich na MacIntyres aig Mem Donaldson. Bha t霉saire a鈥 chinnidh leis fh猫in ann am b脿ta. Nochd toll anns an t-slige.聽
Stob am fear 貌rdag san toll. Ach cha robh comas aige am b脿ta a sti霉ireadh. Mar sin, ghe脿rr e 貌rdag dheth. Leis gur e saor a bha ann, bha inneal gearraidh air choreigin aige. Sti霉ir e am b脿ta don chala. D猫 an sgeul as fhe脿rr leibh fh猫in?!
Thog Donaldson taigh ann an 脌ird nam Murchan ach chaidh a sgrios le teine anns na ceathradan. Ghluais i a Dh霉n 脠ideann far an do chaochail i ann an naoi ceud deug, caogad 始s a h-ochd (1958).

The Little Letter 990
I was telling you about M.E.M. Donaldson and her book 鈥榃anderings in the Western Highlands and Islands鈥. She has an account of how the MacIntyres got their name.
It goes聽 back to the time of Somerled the Great. He was a Gaelic-Norse leader. He was alive in the 12th century. He was wanting to marry the daughter of the King of Man. But her father, King Olaf, refused his permission. Somerled did not accept the refusal. And he obtained help from his foster-brother, Maurice MacNeill.
Somerled and Olaf were sailing in their galleys. Maurice was on board Olaf鈥檚 galley. He made holes in the hull. He filled the holes with butter to keep the seawater out. He made bungs to fill the holes when the butter would be gone.
The King鈥檚 vessel reached Ardnamurchan. It was stormy. The butter left the holes. Water started to leak in.
Somerled was close by in his own galley. Olaf asked Somerled to help him. Somerled refused that until he got [would get] permission to marry Olaf鈥檚 daughter. He got permission.
Maurice put the bungs in the holes in the hull. That stopped the water getting in. Maurice was a joiner/carpenter. Because of that, he possessed a boring implement.
People called his children 鈥榯he children of the carpenter鈥. We know them today in English as the 鈥楳acIntyres鈥.
Now, Mem Donaldson has a second story about how the MacIntyres started. The progenitor of the clan was by himself in a boat. A hole appeared in the hull.
The man shoved a thumb in the hole. But he couldn鈥檛 steer the boat. Thus, he cut his thumb off. Because he was a joiner/carpenter, he had some cutting device or other. He guided the boat to [the] harbour. Which story do you prefer?!
Donaldson built a house in Ardnamurchan but it was destroyed by fire in the forties. She moved to Edinburgh where she died in 1958.
