Kathy Clugston introduces a colourful programme of Symphonic Storytellers from the Ulster Hall in Belfast. The Ulster Orchestra is conducted by Anna Su艂kowska-Migo艅 - first prize winner at the La Maestra conducting competition in Paris in March 2022.

Its curtain-up with Lutos艂awski's Little Suite for Orchestra. It was originally written for chamber orchestra in 1950, in response to a commission from Radio Warsaw. It specialised in popular repertoire and the piece, based on folk melodies from the Rzesz贸w region of southern Poland, quickly gained interest. It was revised and extended for symphony orchestra the following year.

Shostakovich wrote his Piano Concerto No.1 in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings in 1933, aged 27, as a graduation piece. He had intended to write a trumpet concerto for the Principal Trumpet of the Leningrad Philharmonic, but keen to showcase his own talents as a pianist, he added more and more piano, until it eventually took centre stage. It is full of humour, parody and musical quotes. The soloists in this performance are the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Barry Douglas and Niall Keatley, Principal Trumpet of the 麻豆官网首页入口 Symphony Orchestra - both from Northern Ireland.

Staying with Russia, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade rounds off the concert in style. Inspired by the tales of The Arabian Nights, the composer described it as 鈥渁 kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images鈥 scattered through four movements. Here the solo violin represents Scheherezade himself, with the trombones and basses portraying the cruel Sultan.

During the interval Kathy speaks with Barry Douglas, incorporating a track from his album latest release.
