The third annual Eurovision Song Contest, broadcast from AVRO Studios in Hilversum, the Netherlands. The Dutch hosted the event after winning the previous year, starting the convention which has been used every year since. The winning entry "Dors, mon amour" was sung by France's Andre Claveau. However, it was another entry which went on to become more famous - the Italian entry "Nel blu dipinto di blu" had to be performed twice after some countries had trouble picking it up and it later went on to become very successful in the United States of America where it is commonly known as "Volare".It reached number one in the US charts and at the Eurovision fiftieth anniversary show "Congratulations" in 2005 it was voted the second best ever entry in the competition. The 1958 contest was the last time to date that the United Kingdom has not entered the competition and together with 1956 it was the only year that none of the featured songs were performed in English.
