The twelfth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Grosser Festsaal der Wiener Hofburg in Vienna, Austria. It was the United Kingdom's first win in the competition with Sandie Shaw's "Puppet on a String" - although the UK had already hosted the event twice before when the winning country declined to hold it. Legendary Australian artist and entertainer Rolf Harris provided the commentary for UK viewers. The Austrian presenter became confused when announcing results and declared the United Kingdom champions before Ireland's votes had been cast, but it did not affect the overall result with the UK winning by the biggest margin that had yet been seen in Eurovision's history with more than twice as many votes as the second place song.Ironically Sandie Shaw originally hated the song's composition although she would go on to re-release it in 2007. Despite the success of "Puppet", fourth place entry "L'amour est bleu" sung by Luxembourg's Vicky Leandros actually went on to be the biggest international hit.
