Fruit and flowers
There are no seasons here so there is no one time when the trees shed their leaves, and no one time when they all bloom. Yet all the individuals from the same species will produce their flowers at about the same time, as they must do if they are to cross-pollinate. Since there is little wind, the trees can not rely on wind to help with pollination. Instead they must rely on insects and other animals, enticing them with feasts of pollen and nectar. Birds carry much of the heavier seeds that come in the form of fruits. At night, however it is bats that do this job. Most bats eat insects but in the tropics many bats specialise in collecting fruit and live on nothing else. There are many types of figs in the jungle so bats are always able to find figs of some kind somewhere. Some eat them in the trees while others prefer to carry them back to their roosts.
