Chillingham cattle live in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland and are an ancient breed of cattle that live semi-wild. They were first penned in a great park in the thirteenth century and have lived here ever since, with scarcely any interference from human beings. The animals may well be very similar to animals that wandered around the farms during Roman times. They are formidable animals with big horns and very different to the gentle Friesians of today. One great bull rules the herd, mates with the cows and fights with all the young males that challenge him. Eventually, after two or three years, he will lose and be forced to surrender his place to a younger male. The cattle that we have today have been bred from these wilder types of cattle.
