An insight into music in the mid-1930s and the effects of Nazi rule on composers and the so-called degenerate music. Howard Goodall focuses on B茅la Bart贸k, Richard Strauss and Carl Orff. The Soviet Union was also controlling of the arts, and under Joseph Stalin's leadership, modernism in music was prohibited. Goodall discusses the return to patriotism through music with the background to Shostakovich鈥檚 'Leningrad Symphony'.
