Moment of Reflection 14th July 2013 Rev'd Ruth Scott
Today is Sea Sunday. I remember once feeling desperately seasick and staggering from side to side on the bridge of a ship powering through rough seas while the Captain and crew stood by perfectly at ease. In the same way, relinquishing the comfort and shelter of our psychological or spiritual home port to engage with wider reality, can leave us feeling equally all at sea, at odds with ourselves, struggling to get our bearings, and fearful of being overcome by the chaos of new encounters, ideas and experiences.
It鈥檚 much easier to shut out worlds beyond the one we know, and to criticise others who leave the firm ground we believe we hold. But that鈥檚 not what faith is about. The wind of the Spirit compels us out of our safe harbours into ever wider contexts to be challenged and changed by that experience. It鈥檚 only by allowing ourselves to be 鈥榓ll at sea鈥 that we discover our 鈥榮ea legs鈥 and are able to stand strong and steady, even in the wildest storms
