Litir 300: Sgeulachd Morachan is Mionachan, P脿irt 3
Tha mi a鈥 dol a chur cr矛och an-dr脿sta air an sgeulachd thraidiseanta a th貌isich mi o chionn ceala-deug 鈥 鈥淢orachan is Mionachan.鈥 Nuair a dh鈥檉h脿g sinn mu dheireadh e, bha Morachan aig an loch, a鈥 feuchainn ri uisge fhaighinn don bhean-fhuine le criathar. Chaidh eun seachad air sg猫ith is thuirt e ris, 鈥淪uath poll bog ris is cumaidh sin l脿n e. Suath poll bog ris.鈥
Shuath e poll bog ris is chuir e uisge ann, ach nach do ruith a h-uile deur troimhe. Chaidh faoileag seachad is dh鈥檈igh an fhaoileag, 鈥淪uath cr猫adh ruadh rag ris is cumaidh sin l脿n e. Suath cr猫adh ruadh rag ris.鈥 Fhuair e cr猫adh ruadh rag is shuath e ris a鈥 chriathar e. L矛on e an criathar le uisge is cha do ruith aon deur troimhe.
Thug e an t-uisge don bhean-fhuine. Rinn a鈥 bhean-fhuine am bonnach. Is thug Morachan am bonnach don ghille-shabhail. Thug an gille-sabhail dha an sop. Is thug e an sop don bhoin. Is bhleoghainn a鈥 bh貌 am bainne. Is thug e am bainne don chat. Is dh鈥櫭瞝 an cat am bainne.
Is ruith an cat an luch. Is sgr貌b an luch an t-矛m. Is shuath e an t-矛m ri casan a鈥 choin. Is ruith an c霉 am fiadh. Is shn脿mh am fiadh an t-uisge. Is fhliuch an t-uisge a鈥 chlach. Is dh鈥檉haobharaich a鈥 chlach an tuagh. Is ghe脿rr an tuagh an t-slat. Is fhuair Morachan an t-slat.
Ach nuair a r脿inig e an t-脿ite far an robh Mionachan bha Mionachan air sg脿ineadh leis na dh鈥檌th e de na cnothan!
Is iomadh duine a thogadh ann an dachaigh Gh脿idhealach aig a bheil an st貌iridh sin fhathast. Bidh m貌ran e貌lach air na caractaran mar Biorachan Beag is Biorachan M貌r. Anns an leabhar ainmeil de sgeulachdan traidiseanta le Iain 脪g 脤le, 鈥淧opular Tales of the West Highlands鈥, 鈥檚 iad na h-ainmean a th鈥 orra Murchag is Mionachag. Anns an leabhar thathar ag r脿dh gun deach an sgeulachd a chruinneachadh ann am m貌ran 脿iteachan air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd. Bha sin anns an naoidheamh linn deug. Nach math gu bheil i be貌 fhathast.
Bidh beagan mh矛osan ann mus nochd cnothan sa choille. Chan eil ann an-dr脿sta ach toiseach an Earraich. Tha beagan teas ann an solas na gr猫ine, ge-t脿, an d猫idh m矛osan dorch鈥 a鈥 gheamhraidh. Ach saoil d猫 an se貌rsa samhraidh a bhios againn ann an Alba am-bliadhna? Suarach cho math 鈥檚 a bha e an-uiridh, ged a bha an samhradh a bhon-uiridh math fh猫in.
鈥橲 e an t-eagal a th鈥 orm, is a th鈥 air m貌ran, leis nach robh geamhradh fuar re貌ta againn, gum bi an samhradh rudeigin truagh. Uaireannan bidh deagh shamhradh a鈥 leantainn air geamhradh fuar. Uill, 鈥檚 e sin a tha cuid a鈥 cumail a-mach co-dhi霉. No an e gum bi geamhradh fuar a鈥 leantainn air deagh shamhradh?
鈥橲 ann mar sin a bha e anns a鈥 bhliadhna ochd ceud deug is sia ar fhichead (1826). Thathar a鈥 cuimhneachadh na bliadhna sin ann am beul-aithris mar bliadhna le deagh shamhradh agus an uair sin droch gheamhradh. 鈥橲 e Bliadhna an Teas Mh貌ir a chanar rithe. Bliadhna an Teas Mh貌ir. Cha robh uisge sam bith ann eadar an C猫itean agus an L霉nastal. Thiormaich na h-uillt is na h-aibhnichean. Bhathar ag r脿dh cuideachd gun do thoirmich cuid de na lochan air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd, ach chan eil mi a鈥 creidsinn sin!
Ach 鈥檚 d貌cha gu bheil mi a鈥 dol air thoiseach orm fh矛n. Cha d鈥 fhuair sinn sneachd na cuthaig fhathast. Fanaidh mi greis mus cuir mi na sgithean agam a-mach 脿 sealladh.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach
Puing-ch脿nain na seachdaine: Tha beagan teas ann an solas na gr猫ine: there鈥檚 a little heat in the light of the sun. Consider both this sentence and Bliadhna an Teas Mh貌ir (the year of the great heat) 鈥 did you notice that teas in both of these sentences is in the genitive singular case (it is only going to be singular as 鈥渉eat鈥 is a singular concept) 鈥 in the first after the quantitative noun beagan and in the second as a straightforward possessive (鈥渢he year OF the heat鈥)? And did you notice that this is identical to the nominative singular? Teas does not inflect. You will notice however that the qualifying adjective m貌r does inflect and is both lenited and slenderised in the genitive. And here is a further interesting point: the similar noun meas can mean both 鈥渏udgement, opinion, respect鈥 and 鈥渇ruit鈥. In the first instance it does not inflect, but in the second, the genitive singular form is measa. The probable reason for the different grammatical behaviour of seemingly identical words is that they have different origins 鈥 meas (opinion) is anciently elated to the English 鈥渕easure鈥, while meas (fruit) bears a distant relationship to the English 鈥渕ast鈥 (fruit of the beech tree).
