Were you thinking what he was thinking?
A decade ago the Conservatives under Michael Howard asked the country in the election campaign: "Are you thinking what we're thinking?"
Electors appeared to deliver the verdict that they were not, and Labour won a third term, but with a reduced majority, while the Tories gained 36 seats and a 33% vote share.
Immigration and Europe were key issues then, as they are to some voters today, which may offer hints or lessons to the current Conservative leadership.
Ellie Price heads into the archives for a Daily Politics film, and also spoke to Lord Howard's former press secretary Jonathan Collett, and to the commentator and former MP Michael Brown.
